Lithium itself is a soft, silvery-white alkali metal. It is the lightest metal and the lightest solid element. Like all alkali metals, lithium is highly reactive and flammable. So this isn’t something you’d want just laying around your house. Especially if you have a toddler running around like I do... So Lithium is a metal so it must be mined right, like copper? Well, not exactly. It’s true lithium can be mined from rocks but mostly it’s found in brine pools. Lithium is also present in seawater but there aren’t any commercially viable methods of extracting it at this time As an aside when you see a meme floating around the internet showing a giant mine where lithium comes from, it’s a lie. As of 2017, most of the world's lithium production is in South America, where lithium-containing brine is extracted from underground pools and concentrated by solar evaporation. The standard extraction technique is to evaporate water from brine. Each batch takes from 18 to 24 months. With so much demand for lithium it’s a fair question to ask... Are Tesla and others doomed? Well…not really The US Geological Survey’s report for 2017 shows that "Worldwide lithium production increased by an estimated 12% in 2016 in response to increased lithium demand for battery applications. Production in Argentina increased nearly 60%, primarily owing to a new brine operation; the leading Argentine producer also increased production. A producer in Chile reported that its production rose by 20%. Two small Australian spodumene operations, one new and one inactive since 2013, planned to begin commercial concentrate production by year end. Worldwide lithium production capacity was reported to be 49,400 tons in 2015; capacity utilization was estimated to be 64% in 2015 and 71% in 2016. Based on average projections by producers and industry analysists of about 14% growth worldwide, consumption of lithium in 2016 is projected to be about 37,800 tons, up from 33,300 tons in 2015. So the trend is going up, but when you look at the overall picture you find that owing to continuing exploration, lithium resources have increased substantially worldwide. Identified lithium resources in the United States, from continental brines, geothermal brines, hectorite, oil field brines, and pegmatites, have been revised to 6.9 million tons. Identified lithium resources in other countries have been revised to approximately 40 million tons. Identified lithium resources in Argentina and Bolivia are about 9 million tons each and in major producing countries are Australia, more than 2 million tons; Chile, more than 7.5 million tons; and China, approximately 7 million tons. Canada’s lithium resources are about 2 million tons. Congo (Kinshasa), Russia, and Serbia have resources of about 1 million tons each. Lithium resources in Brazil and Mexico are approximately 200,000 tons each and Austria, and Zimbabwe have more than 100,000 tons each. Beyond just producing more lithium, companies like Tesla have focused on creating a closed-loop battery recycling program since as early as 2011. So while Tesla drivetrains are rated to go 1M miles, and the batteries will likely last to last north of 350K miles, once the cars do get turned in, Tesla isn’t going to just throw away those precious metals. If you’re an investor in companies reliant on lithium for their batteries such as Tesla, Apple, Google, or any other company making electronics today, you shouldn’t worry about the supply chain. Au niveau du projet ça va très bien, au niveau financier on est correct au niveau des dépenses, et aussi au niveau de la schedule, comme ce l'on prépare débuter l'operation du concentrateur vers le mois d'octobre, et la partie de hydrometallurgie vers la fin d'année selon le plan. Donc nous continuons d'être en ligne avec le plan. Presentement, au niveau de la construction on est diréctement sur la schedule, ce ça va bien, et au niveau du buget on est au buget qu'on côntrole à tous les semaines et on est exactement egal au buget prèvu. On continue selon le plan initieux, au rythme qu'on avait prèvu et on continue comme ça. Yves summarises the schedule beginning with the site preparation work that commenced in September 2011, describing the progress made on the site to date and highlighting the plans to commence commissioning of the new plants by December 2012. Canada Lithium Corp., a "clean-tech" mine developer is constructing an open-pit lithium carbonate mine and processing plant in Lacorne Township near Val d'Or, Quebec to meet the growing needs of the emerging global market for electric and hybrid electric vehicles, as well as grid-storage solutions. It is anticipated that commissioning of the mine and plant will occur in late 2012 and full production of an annualized 20,000 tonnes of lithium carbonate to commence in Q3 2013. Metallurgical tests have produced battery-grade lithium carbonate from deposit samples and the Company plans to market its products in North America, Europe and Asia. In-operando high-speed tomography of lithium-ion batteries during thermal runaway. Donal P. Finegan et al (2015), Nature Communications http://dx.doi.org/10.1038/ncomms7924 Prevention and mitigation of thermal runaway presents one of the greatest challenges for the safe operation of lithium-ion batteries. Here, we demonstrate for the first time the application of high-speed synchrotron X-ray computed tomography and radiography, in conjunction with thermal imaging, to track the evolution of internal structural damage and thermal behaviour during initiation and propagation of thermal runaway in lithium-ion batteries. This diagnostic approach is applied to commercial lithium-ion batteries (LG 18650 NMC cells), yielding insights into key degradation modes including gas-induced delamination, electrode layer collapse and propagation of structural degradation. It is envisaged that the use of these techniques will lead to major improvements in the design of Li-ion batteries and their safety features.

Discharging During the first stage of discharge lithium atoms oxidize by forming Li+ ions and electrons, whereas Li+ ions move to the positive electrode diffusing through the electrolyte and the separator. The electrons flow from the negative electrode to the positive on the external circuitry, where the resulting current flow can be used for an application. At the positive electrode the electrons recombine with the Li+ ions and are stored in the molecular structure of the active material. Charging: If an external voltage with the same polarity is applied between the current collectors, the charge process will start. The lithium atoms leave the metal oxid structure and ionize into Li+ ions under the release of an electron of each one. In analogy with the discharge process Li+ ions diffuse to the negative electrode. At the surface of the graphite particles the Li+ ions and electrons recombine with each other forming neutral lithium atoms and are reintercalated into the molecular structure of the graphite particles.

And so when a cell phone, laptop, or car battery explodes it can rightfully be a cause for concern. However, there’s a lot that goes into the creation of any single lithium ion cell and even a small error at a given point in that process could lead to big problems during the battery’s life cycle. Greg Less, Michigan Engineering’s Battery User Facility’s Manager discusses not only why and how the lithium ion batteries that we all use so frequently might explode, but how researchers at the University of Michigan are trying to change the way batteries are made for a safer and more efficient future. ABOUT THE PROFESSOR Greg Less is the Senior Laboratory Manager at the UMEI Battery Fabrication and Characterization User Facility, responsible for the day-to-day operation of the laboratory. Greg received a doctorate in Chemistry from the University of Michigan. Prior to joining UMEI, he was a research scientist with battery companies T/J Technologies and A123 Systems.

While this new federal rule applies to many sUAS operators, the AMA says in a blog post that its members flying under the AMA safety program for recreational operations are not affected by FAR 107, which includes the requirement for the sUAS operator to hold an FAA issued Remote Pilot Certificate. As new lithium batteries are approved for use on U.S. airliners and business airplanes, the FAA is reportedly applying more stringent safety standards for the power cells that power many critical systems on those aircraft. The Wall Street Journal reports that the higher safety standards apply to both rechargeable and non-rechargeable batteries, as government documents show that many of the recognized risks are similar between the two types. Last week we reported that EAA Chapter 1083 and John Robinson, the founder of AV84all.org, have joined forces to build a Zenith CH 750 Cruzer in Salisbury, North Carolina to benefit all pilots with disabilities. The EAA chapter members will launch a Zenith build-project on September 10, of this year at Rowan County Airport. Zenith Aircraft will provide engineering oversight to help customize this Zenith CH 750 Cruzer to fit the needs of the pilots with disabilities who are involved in the project.
